AppsYouLove, a game development company, experienced a significant organizational shift when most of their team departed to focus on a new project called Magify. The remaining team members committed to rebuilding the company from its core, facing the challenge of reconstructing business processes from scratch. This critical juncture demanded a comprehensive approach to technological infrastructure and strategic planning.
The company struggled with fundamental operational hurdles during its rebirth. Their existing AWS environment was centralized within a single Management account, contradicting best practices and creating complex resource management issues. Limited communication between teams, undefined workflows, and unclear resource allocation mechanisms hindered efficient operations. The need to separate resources for existing and new projects further complicated their technological landscape.
After conducting our planned Well-Architected Framework Review for AppsYouLove, we revealed 22 High-Risk Issues (HRIs) in their AWS infrastructure. Of these critical issues, 11 were successfully remediated during the engagement. The review process provided unprecedented visibility into the company's cloud spending and operational inefficiencies.
Key WAFR findings included:
The review established a new operational paradigm where the IT team now consistently synchronizes with the Finance team before deploying new implementations. This approach ensures careful budget consideration and alignment of technological investments with financial constraints. The customer expressed significant satisfaction with the increased clarity of their AWS environment and the newfound ability to make more informed, strategic technological decisions.
Our intervention fundamentally redesigned AppsYouLove's technological management approach. We implemented a multi-account AWS strategy, creating clear separation between different project workloads and improving resource management. A new account structure was established, enabling better cost allocation and enhanced team collaboration.
We developed comprehensive access control mechanisms, ensuring secure and efficient resource utilization. Regular communication protocols were introduced between IT, Finance, and Operations teams, facilitating more strategic budget planning and resource allocation. The implementation included establishing workflows for resource requests, defining team responsibilities, and creating a robust knowledge management system.
These improvements qualified AppsYouLove for $5,000 in AWS credits and positioned the company for more agile and scalable operations in the competitive game development market.
